(OCTOBER) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).  Almost 15 years ago THE ROC opened its doors for all teens from Grades 7-12.  Since then thousands of teens have been exposed to Christ and His Word through the Gospel witnessed at THE ROC.  The following has been the mission statement of THE ROC to keep us focused

THE MISSION OF THE ROC (Watertown Recreation & Outreach Center for Youth)

The ROC will 1) Offer ALL teenagers in Watertown a place where youth can gather to socialize and interact with other teenagers and counsel with Christian adults. 2) Offer teenagers a positive environment for recreation, Bible study, worship, service opportunities, and fellowship. 3) Offer avenues for connecting teenagers to active membership in a WELS church.

(SEPTEMBER) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       The Lord answered and told her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is needed.” (Luke 10:41).  The ROC Golf Outing was another huge success as fourteen teens (most teens ever)  did a wonderful job presenting our ROC Youth Center.  It was clear to all that at THE ROC the ONE THING that Jesus refers to, the WORD OF GOD, is being taught, heard and practiced.  We thank our Lord also for the almost $11,000 raised from the Golf Outing and the dedicated volunteers who organized it.

From the ROC Rummage Sale Committee:  Once again God has blessed the ROC rummage sale efforts as we have been able to hand in $13,381.00.  Since the ROC budget for the year is $85,000 this fundraiser will help pay for approximately 2 months of ROC expenses.  A big thank you to Trinity for once again allowing us to hold this fundraiser at the Western Avenue campus.  Thank you to all the volunteers who worked to set up & pack up and clean up after the sale, receive all the wonderful donations and to the many shoppers who came to the sale.  Thank you to the ROC teens who helped pack up and clean up after the sale and a special Thank you to Twice Is Nice who for the 16th year came to pick up items left over from the sale.  Thank you also to the Kohl's people who came to help pack up.  We will be getting an additional $500.00 from Kohl's.

(AUGUST) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       “In every way I gave you an example that, by working hard like this, we need to help the weak and to remember the words that the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  (Acts 20:35).   Our volunteers at our Watertown Recreation and Outreach Center (ROC) for Youth are incredible.  There are those who help supervise, which isn’t always the easiest, those who bake and cook, those who mentor and tutor, those who do activities with the teens, those who are involved in the many after-school programs, those who organize special events and fund raisers, those who serve on boards and committees, those who use technology for the good of THE ROC, those who maintain the facility and remove the snow and the list goes on and on. Hundreds of hours were also given to organize the ROC/Golf Banquet, Rummage Sale, Tractor Pull Clean-up and Brat Frys.  “It is more blessed to give than to receive” because it pleases our gracious God who gives us forgiveness in Christ.  May His love continue to stir our hearts to give and also to appreciate those who do.  Thank you volunteers in Christ.

(JULY) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’” (Psalm 122:1).  Recently, we transported a bunch of teens to one of our Watertown churches for Ascension Worship.  How happy they were to hear God’s Word and worship.  Almost all of the teens were unchurched.  Members noticed as we readied the teens by showing them where to find the liturgy, hymns, psalms and items in the Christian Worship supplement.  It was a great help for them to have the worship order on the front screens.  It was also a surprise when the pastor expressed his joy that the ROC teens attended.

(MAY) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC                 “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection.”(Romans 12:9,10)   As we plan the teen presentation for the dinner at the Golf Outing on June 24th, we are looking at the theme of siblings giving the presentation.  God teaches us to love each other as we are to love a brother or sister.  At THE ROC we pray the sibling love grows but more than that, we pray the genuine love of God grows where our love increases for our brothers and sisters in Christ.

(APRIL) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       “We love because he first loved us."  (1 John 4:19). As we share Christ, the Savior of all at our Watertown Recreation and Outreach Center (THE ROC) for Youth and as the teens watch the Adult Volunteers serve Christ at THE ROC, many teens also want to serve and ask how they can help.  One way is for a teen to become a volunteer.  After much training and review, two teens were recently approved as official volunteers and they were overjoyed (see pic on our Facebook page).  Our three-tiered volunteer program includes high schoolers, those 18-20 and those 21 and above.  Responsibility sheets are available to all who ask.  Teen volunteers wear a shirt (crosses on back and front designed by teens) bearing the Bible passage, “We love because He first loved us."

Volunteers also serve on our ROC Board.  We give thanks to God for their love and commitment.  The 2018 Board is:  From St. John’s: Gary Lauersdorff  and Brian Schmidt (Vice-President); From St. Luke’s:  Pete Westermeyer and Scott Krause (Treasurer); From St. Mark’s: Brandon Fisher (Secretary) and Blain Parsons; From Trinity: Rick Schwartz (President) and Don Hale.

FUTURE ROC EVENTS:  Please volunteer to help.  Thanks!

(MARCH) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       A lesson about living the love of Christ:  Recently, on Sat., Feb. 10th, Todd Morris, an adult volunteer at THE ROC Youth Center, dressed up as a "homeless man" and hung around outside the youth center.  The "homeless man" carried a milk crate which contained "all he owned" and was also used as his seat.  None of the teens recognized Todd but instead thought he was a real homeless man living on the street.  The "homeless man" also carried a sign, "Will work for food".  The hope was to get the teens in THE ROC talking about what to do about the man outside.  We were happy to see how the hearts of the teens felt for the man and were trying to figure out how to help him and remain safe at the same time.  When Todd finally revealed himself during our Bible/Talk Time, you could see every teen reviewing all the feelings they had when they thought he was really a homeless man.  The teens learned to avoid a cold heart but also learned how to reach out and show love to people, remaining safe at the same time.  We are sure many of the teens were responding to God's love in Christ, which they have heard constantly at THE ROC.

Put it on your calendar:  The ROC Golf Outing will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2018, 3:00 (Golf) & 7:00 (Buffet).  In order to offset the rising costs, the menu has been changed to a Cookout Buffet of Burgers, Brats, & Pork Loin, Baked Beans, Homemade Mac & Cheese, Roasted Corn on the Cob, Coleslaw, Potato Salad, Pub Chips and Assorted Cookies & Brownies.

(FEBRUARY) PEBBLES FROM THE ROC       “Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry."  (James 1:19).  We are often asked, “How do you get a teenager to really talk?”  There is no perfect answer to the question but being willing to actively and patiently listen at the right time helps tremendously.  It happens often that a somber and sad teen will come to THE ROC, unwilling at first to talk, but will open up later to Pastor/Director Mueller trusting that there will be a loving and listening ear.  A teen is far more willing to be guided by God’s Word after they feel they have been heard and understood.

Many teens from THE ROC attended our churches’ Live Nativity at St. Luke’s.  What a blessing to have so many unchurched teens hear about their Savior in such a unique way.  The teens were deeply touched by the birth of their Savior.
